Mini vs. Custom Sessions

I often get asked whether someone should book a mini session or a custom session. Today on the blog, I want to explore the differences between the two and help you plan ahead for which one would be best suited for your needs! Depending on the occasion, each has its own advantages!

Mini Sessions

My mini sessions are held on specific dates usually every 4-6 weeks and are tailored for individuals seeking a condensed yet impactful photography experience. Held exclusively in the studio, these sessions are perfect for those looking for relatively quick but high-quality portraits. Whether it’s for a professional headshot, maternity photos, or capturing the sweet youth and innocence of your child (or a pet!), studio mini sessions are a great way to highlight a subject in a minimalistic environment with no distractions.

Mini sessions include up to 1 hour of photography time and hair and makeup artistry provided by a professional artist (optional, but recommended). You also have the opportunity to have multiple wardrobe changes and background colors during these sessions.

At the conclusion of the session, you will have the opportunity to view all the photos we took and decide how many you'd like to purchase. Your favorite 2 images are included in your session fee, but we find most clients like to add on extras after they see the results!

Custom Sessions

On the other end of the spectrum, custom photography sessions offer a world of possibilities for those seeking a personalized photography experience. This option is perfect for families, couples, and seniors who wish to include multiple family members or explore different locations. The door is wide open for outdoor shoots, studio sessions, or a delightful combination of both.

One of the significant advantages of a custom session is the personalized in-home planning period beforehand. This session planning can help you feel more comfortable with me and the process if you’re nervous or feeling unprepared. In addition to planning your wardrobe and locations together, we also look through visual examples of what you like and don’t like. Making sure we’re on the same page about your vision and goals for your photos helps me produce the best possible results for you! Session planning is a collaborative effort, offering an opportunity to get creative and allowing you to feel at ease during the photoshoot.

On session day, a professional hair and makeup artist will help you look and feel your very best! When you arrive for photos, you'll be totally prepared and confident, and all our planning will make for a smooth, seamless, and stress-free day.

A custom session extends beyond the shoot itself. We engage in in-depth discussions about how you intend to enjoy your photographs, whether in digital format, beautifully printed albums, stunning wall art, or often a combination! This thoughtful consideration ensures your memories are preserved in the most meaningful way. You’ll have the opportunity to put together your own collection of images and products after you see the photos we captured according to your personal taste and budget!

Choosing Your Perfect Experience

So, how do you decide between the two? It all comes down to your needs and desires. If you’re looking for a quick, individual portrait or have low photo-tolerance kids or pets you are wanting photographs of, a mini session might be the right fit for you. It’s an excellent option for those who appreciate simplicity and minimalism without sacrificing quality.

However, if you want a comprehensive, tailor-made experience that caters to your unique story and preferences, a custom session is always the ideal route to go. With a longer session duration, personalized planning, and a focus on your vision, it guarantees a relaxed, meaningful photography experience full of inspired variety. It’s not just about taking great pictures; it’s about telling your story in a way that feels genuine and true to you.

Whether you choose a mini session or custom session, what matters most is that you feel seen, valued, and understood, and that together we’ll create your best photos yet!
