Rowan & Vincent - Dark Romantic Couples Photoshoot
Is it hot in here or is it just this photoshoot?! So excited to tell you guys about this one!!! I’ve known Rowan through the local photographer community for years now - her business, Laurel Photography is known for incredibly rich, moody, emotional imagery and I really admire her as an artist - you can follow her HERE.
Rowan knows I spend a lot of time in my studio when I’m not doing outdoor photography, so she sent me a reel one day with a concept she thought I’d like. The idea was super simple: drape some black sheer fabric over a studio light, and let it hang and flow around a subject for some cool dramatic portraits. I told her something along the lines of “Oh man I would love to do something like this but I don’t think I know many people here who would be up for it"…..to which she replied with something along the lines of “Well if you ever need a tatted alternative couple as models, hit me upppp”…..and well, the rest of the story is pretty obvious by now.
What makes this photoshoot even more special though is that, at the time, Rowan and Vincent were counting down to their wedding day! Due to travel and work schedules, we actually ended up taking these photos the day before they left to go get married at a cool location in front of a waterfall (really can’t wait to see what their photographer captured for them that day!), so it was the perfect timing to get that totally smitten/obsessed with each other vibe going into a really big week.
And if you can’t tell they’re a solid match, you’re blind haha building off of the original concept, we leaned into their existing wardrobe of dark fitted clothing with Vincent in some cool black boots and both of them with statement making gold jewelry (and Rowan’s STUNNING engagement ring that is totally visible in the photos…but I want to crash out because I didn’t make a special point to get more ring-focused shots…obviously I don’t do a lot of engagement/wedding work and obviously I was distracted by all the other dramatic moody romantic stuff going on, okay give me a break!)
But anyway, the overall concept/effect turned out really really well. We mixed up the “veil” and lighting placement throughout the session so that some shots were clear and crisp while others were more obscured and shadowed - giving the whole gallery a deep, mysterious feeling that suggests these two are in some other dark fantasy world where no one else exists, at least just for a moment (because they do have a beautiful newly merged family and cool kids to keep up with after all, ha). And if you agree that they totally give Morticia and Gomez vibes, then we nailed it, they loved that comparison :) Man, such a great creative project for October, amiright?
P.S. Enjoy these totally not romantic test shots I took while prepping the studio for this session haha gotta have some fun with it!
